An In-Depth Guide to Choosing the Right Fit for You
If you’ve ever considered commissioning a suit, you’ve likely come across the terms bespoke and made-to-measure. They’re often used interchangeably, but in reality, they describe two similar but different approaches to tailoring.
At Jack Davison Bespoke, we specialise in both, and we are often asked which is right for a particular client. This guide will help you understand the difference so you can make an informed choice that suits your style, budget and priorities.
What is a Bespoke Suit?
Bespoke is the purest form of tailoring. Every detail of the garment is created from scratch to fit your body and your preferences precisely.
Key characteristics of a bespoke suit:
• A Unique Pattern:
We draft by hand an individual paper pattern based on your exact measurements and posture. No pre-existing templates—your pattern is yours alone.
• Multiple Fittings:
Typically, you’ll have at least two or three fittings, including a baste fitting, where the suit is loosely stitched together so we can refine the shape before final assembly.
• Hand Craftsmanship:
All of the suit is made by hand, from the canvassed chest construction to hand-sewn buttonholes.
• Total Control:
Every element—from lapel shape and pocket style to lining and button choice—is decided by you.
A bespoke suit requires time, patience and investment, but the result is something truly personal and unique.
What is a Made-to-Measure Suit?
Made-to-measure bridges the gap between ready-to-wear and bespoke. It starts with a base pattern, which we adjust to better fit your measurements. However it is still made from scratch for you.
Key characteristics of a made-to-measure suit:
• Starts with a base Pattern:
Rather than drafting a unique pattern, we modify a manipulate an existing template to accommodate your proportions.
• Fewer Fittings:
Usually, there is one main fitting to check its looking perfect, with further tweaks as needed.
• Efficient Turnaround:
Made-to-measure suits typically take less time to complete than bespoke as they are machine made.
• Customisation Within Limits:
You’ll still have plenty of choice over fabrics and details, but there are some design constraints compared to fully bespoke.
Made-to-measure is ideal if you’d like a high-quality suit with a more accessible price point and faster delivery.
